When you keep going back to a restaurant for their unfailing quality and standard, you know this one is a keeper. After multiple trips to Lal Qila restaurant, both at their Surry Hills and Darling Harbour location, I still feel the excitement of flavours and taste that they present to me each time I visit them.
Lal Qila's food is rich and royal, quite symbolic of the region it represents (Northern India and Pakistan). Generous servings, large chunks of cheese (paneer or cottage cheese) and meat and plenty of flavours has been their key to success and the consistency in their food has helped grow their popularity.
Although operating at 2 locations, Lal Qila Restaurant has some exclusives at each of the locations. Try their specialties from areas of Lahore and Rajasthan like the spiced and fried crispy okra or Lahori Chatkhare (spinach leaves in a crispy batter), they will both leave you yearning for more. Their tandoori specialties like tandoori paneer (cottage cheese) and tandoori cauliflower talk of a saga between the food marinated in a blend of spices and the tandoor (a traditional clay oven), where it is cooked to perfection.
If you do not have a chance to explore their food at great lengths, then sign yourself up for the lunch buffet (every weekday) at their Darling Harbour location. Priced at a reasonable $25 per head, this buffet offers the best dishes from the cuisine in an all you can eat format. Plenty of vegetarian and meat options from entrees like tandoori paneer to chicken tikka, curries from butter chicken to chickpeas masala, rice specialties like biryani and rice pudding for dessert. Located close to many workplaces, this is popular amongst large lunch groups owing to the ample space at the restaurant and its economical price. Bookings are recommended for large groups.
