Lakey Farm is a regenerative farm and winemaker in Sunbury, Victoria, with a focus on giving more back to the land than it takes. The farm specialises in free-range, pasture-raised, native grass-fed beef, goat, lamb, and mutton, all of which are brought up and cared for by farmers John and Tristia Lakey.
The farm practices rotational grazing; a sustainable farming technique whereby livestock is frequently moved from one paddock to fresh pasture. This prevents overgrazing, stimulates the growth of native grasses and naturally prevents parasites from infecting the animals. Regenerative farming also has the amazing capability of sequestering carbon in soil—an incredibly important function in aiding the reduction of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and reducing climate change.
Lakey Farm's range of wine is produced with minimal intervention, from Victorian fruit that is sustainably grown. The farm itself is home to 30-year-old pinot noir vines, the fruit of which is used to produce Lakey Farm's rosé, sparkling rosé, estate pinot noir, and 'Wild' pinot noir. The wine labels feature hand-drawn illustrations of native insects and forbs found on the farm; they are a celebration of ecosystem biodiversity, which occurs as a result of regenerative farming practices.
Each weekend, John and Tristia Lakey bring their produce and wine to farmers' markets across Victoria.
