Lake Wyaralong is a true gem just 85Km from Brisbane between Beaudesert and Boonah. Although only an hour's drive from the Queensland capital, the area is teaming with wildlife and relatively unaffected by light pollution.
Lake Wyaralong is close enough to Brisbane, Boonah, and the Gold Coast that it is possible to spend an evening watching the stars before driving home again. We chose to do this, basing ourselves at the Lake Wyaralong recreation area for the evening intending to shoot star trails before heading home. However, for those who wish to stay overnight, Mount Joyce Base Camp offers walk-in or kayak access with toilets, water tanks, and an open camping area.
By pure good luck, as we were setting up an entire, very friendly club arrived and began setting up their telescopes. They invited my son to come and look through them, and me to mount my camera on one of their telescopes. The light pollution is so low there that they apparently go there regularly.
