Beechworth is about 290kms from Melbourne or a 3 hour non-stop drive. A beautiful historic town with buildings that reflect the gold found in the area and famous for its bakeries and eateries.
Near Lake Sambell is the entrance to a 800 metre tunnel that was started in 1876 and completed in 1880. An engineering feat at the time, it was built to expose new areas for gold sluicing by reducing the water level of Spring Creek.

8628 tons of stone was removed to build the tunnel
Lake Sambell was created in the 1920s as a recreation lake. During the Gold Rush of the 1800s, it was originally an open cut sluice operation and the site of the Rocky Mountain Mining Company.
