The snow season is here and a popular day trip destination for friends and family is Lake Mountain . This is unsurprising, as it is a bit closer than places such as Mount Buller and has more budget friendly prices.

It's not the full skiing and snowboarding experience that more adventurous people prefer, but it's fun for a bit of tobogganing and snow play for the younger ones.

The drive there is also lovely, including a stop to admire the view of Maroondah Reservoir .

It's conveniently only about two hours from Melbourne. From the northern suburbs you would also travel via Yarra Valley through to Marysville with the stunning iconic mountains and eerie, tall trees.

When we went, we didn't need snow chains for our tyres. However Lake Mountain's website indicates, On occasions, due to heavy snow fall, it is necessary to carry and fit snow chains, so make sure you check out the daily snow reports

Before you reach the resort, there will be many shops to stop by and hire your equipment. This includes snowpants, boots and gloves. You will find these are usually cheaper than the resorts'. Check out Lake Mountain's price list here and one of the other shop's rates here .

We decided to hire the toboggans at Lake Mountain as we weren't sure about the price difference or what we would need once we arrived at the resort.

It seems tobogganing is the main activity, thus great for kids, as all you need to do is sit down and slide down the runs/slopes. There are several different areas dedicated to this activity.

The snow is a mixture of a natural snowfall and man-made snow, so it is not too deep, but there's still enough to make a few snowmen and have a few snowball fights.

In addition to this, there are opportunities to go snowshoeing or have some basic skiing lessons. Check out all the possible activities at Lake Mountain here .

There's also a bistro but I found that it tended to serve your usual bland cafe and canteen food, so if you prefer, you could pack your own food or drop by one of the Marysville/Yarra Valley stops before or after your trip.

After our bistro stop, we were lucky enough to witness some light snow fall. It was my first time seeing the snow, and I appreciated that there's a resort such as this.

It's budget-friendly compared to the farther destinations that include overwhelming lift prices. It's also a great introductory spot for people who just want to see a bit of snow or expose their younger children to the winter fun.
