Tranquil Lake Joanna, a haven for local birdlife, can be found within the extensive Castlemaine Botanical Gardens. Established in 1860, the gardens contain over 850 trees and provide a myriad of beautiful spaces that transform through the seasons of the year.
The gardens are popular for get-togethers and family occasions. On Easter Sunday each year, Castlemaine Botanical Gardens provides the perfect backdrop for the Strategem Bendigo Winemakers Festival, and on Christmas Day you will spot a couple of al fresco celebrations among the shady trees.
About mid-way through the gardens from the main entrance is an enchanting artist-inspired playground that children and adults will adore. There is a long undercover area with tables, close to the playground, that is usually filled with people celebrating birthdays and other occasions.
As you wander the gravel path that meanders past Lake Joanna and around the perimeter of the gardens, you will be delighted by the treasures to discover including the botanics, birdlife, and quaint rotundas, and on a warm summer's evening you may be lucky enough to stumble across some live folk music.
