Lake Eildon National Park is located 150 km or an approximate 2 hour drive from Melbourne.
Fraser Camping area is within the National Park, which is managed by Parks Victoria, and offers camping within three different grounds - Devil Cove, Lakeside and Candlebark.
Combined, there are around 280 sites within the three grounds. Facilities include showers, flushing toilets, potable and non-potable water.
Situated with the grounds are some electric BBQs and undercover picnic tables which offer scenic views of the lake. There are also additional electric BBQs, toilets and undercover tables at the Forsyth Flat and Herb Fitzroy day visitor areas which are between the Candlebark and Lakeside camping areas.
Sites within each ground need to be booked before arriving on the Parks Victioria
Park Stay booking website. The website allows you to select the camp ground and then the numbered site of your preference as per the attached map and shows which sites are available for your requested dates. You can then proceed to selecting and paying for your site and a booking invoice will be emailed to you.
The camp sites have a limit of 6 people per site, with one car on the site. If you hdave an additional car you will need to add this to your booking and pay the extra $10 per night and park it at the larger car parks within each ground.
The sites are all numbered and set in a bush setting amongst native wildlife. At dusk there are lots of kangaroos that come around on the open shores of the lake which is now a grassed area due to the low water levels of the lake. It is quite amazing to see these animals up close and in their native environment.
There are no camp fires allowed on the individual camp sites yet there are a number of fire pits closer to the lake which offer a chance to mingle with nearby campers as you toast marshmallows. There is no shortage of firewood as there are lots of dead logs and kindling to collect.
