At first, the Thrombolites at Lake Clifton appear to be ordinary rocks. However, they are actually life forms that resemble some of the earliest forms of life on Earth. These structures are generally found in shallow waters and are formed by the cementation of sedimentary grains by biofilms of microorganisms. They aren't found in many places across the world but are spread across Western Australia.

The are located roughly half an hour out of Mandurah. The spot hosting these life-forms has been equipped with a observation walkway for tourists due to the fragility of the thrombolites. The observation walkway links into a 5km Lakeside Loop Walktrail, roughly a 2 hour return walk that suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

There are also picnic tables, toilets and an information shelter for visitors to learn about the history of Thrombolites.

This proved a very interesting and peaceful outing.
