Lady Tabouli, by James Elazzi and directed by Dino Dimitriadis, is a play that explored the complexities of culture, heritage and family.

Danny (Antony Makhlouf) is a compliant and cheerful brother and son who yearns to live his best life. Still, acceptance seems to be impossible from his conservative modern-day Lebanese-Australian family.

It is the day of his sister Josephine's (Nisrine Amine) son's baptism, and she is causing a frenzy at home, preparing for her son's christening, and Danny is the godfather. Danny's mother Dana (Deborah Galanos) and Uncle Mark (Johnny Nasser) are also frantically trying to help with the preparations and are not making the situation any easier.

Tensions are tight and emotions are high as he is thrown into the whirlpool of preparations and to-do lists and the family cannot afford to lose face, especially with Danny recently and mysteriously calling off his engagement.

Among the sugared almonds and balloon deliveries, Danny decides to come out of the closet and he discovers the true colours of those closest to him. Who does he turn to when the people you love refuse to accept the truth?

Lady Tabouli explored a young man being trapped in two worlds as well as what can happen when unconditional love is pushed to its limit.

The performance was filled with humour and poignancy that delves into the deep culture.

There was a depth to the way the characters and narrative were presented. It was captivating with sorrow, rejection, belonging, and loss. It was a relatable performance and executed with such perfection from all the cast.

The cast featured Danny (Antony Makhlouf), Josephine (Nisrine Amine), Dana (Deborah Galanos), and Mark/Sabbah (Johnny Nasser).

Lady Tabouli is a story of a man who his true to himself while his family attempts to enact the most symbolic of ceremonies. It forces us to acknowledge the complexities of Australia's multiculturalism, especially in terms of LGBTQI issues. Gayness may no longer be illegal, however, so many Australian gay people continue to be shunned.

Lady Tabouli was powerful, passionate and showcased rawness and honesty.
