Lady Macbeth Played Wing Defence is a highly energetic show about women in sport, ambition, high school drama, and female friendship. It is a little bit
Mean Girls , and a little bit
Pitch Perfect , all wrapped up in a modern re-telling of Shakespeare’s
Macbeth . Presented by the Crash Theatre Company,
Lady Macbeth Played Wing Defence was written by Courtney McManus and directed by Bec Price. The show stars Orla Jean Poole, Courtney McManus, Kate Sisley, Shannon Rogers, Ana Ferreira Manhoso, Andrea Lim, Georgia McGivern and Rebecca Collin and features original music composed by award-winning vocalist, DJ, and music producer, Project BEXX.

Mac Beth (Orla Jean Poole) is determined to win the title of Year 12 Captain of the Dunsinane Hell-Hounds. When Coach Duncan (Courtney McManus) gives the title of Captain to Chloe Macduff (Shannon Rogers), Mac is outraged and feels robbed. When she is visited in her sleep by three hooded figures, the Dagger Divas, Mac is encouraged to plot her revenge and take the title of Captain for herself at whatever the cost.
I found
Lady Macbeth Played Wing Defence to be a lot of fun. I was really impressed with the musical numbers, choreography, and the singing talents of the cast. I thought that Orla Jean Poole was great as the ambitious and power hungry Mac Beth. The biggest stand-out in the cast for me was Courtney McManus as Coach Duncan. McManus had a stellar singing voice and had some great comedic lines in the show that had the audience in stitches of laughter. I thought that it was a very clever idea to reframe Macbeth as a story about competitive teenage girls fighting for the title of captain of a high school netball team. I caught some really funny Netball puns in several of the songs that made me laugh out loud.
Lady MacBeth Played Wing Defence is bitchy, sporty, and a hell of a lot of fun.
