Have Tea and Tour With Lady Diamantina Bowen
I wonder how many of us really know our history or that we could recite it at a moment's notice? When sitting for school exams, we had an abundance of knowledge, but as the years go on, that knowledge can be pushed to the back of the brain with only the current happenings remembered.

Fortunately, QUT is at the forefront of presenting historical and engaging events for everyone to enjoy, as well as captivating us once again with Australia's unique history.

From Thursday 13th June until Sunday 14th July, QUT and Talk of the Town Storytelling are giving you the opportunity to take a tour of Old Government House, which is inspired by Natalie Cowling's interpretation of Queensland's First Lady, Lady Diamantina Roma Bowen. Natalie is a professional and seasoned musician and actor with an avid passion for storytelling and local history.

Lady Diamantina Bowen was the wife of Queensland's first governor and a woman of true remark. Beautiful, dignified, kind, dutiful, and compassionate are just a few of the qualities that were ascribed to her. Lady Bowen was one of Queensland's most influential women, renowned for introducing a sense of elegance into our new colony, while also establishing the social and cultural blueprint for the growing Brisbane community.

A reflection of her great standing in the community and to celebrate her Greek heritage, a statue of Lady Bowen was commissioned in 1989 by Angelo Efstathis and sculptured by Peter Piperides and stood in the grounds of the Greek Orthodox Community in George Street. In August 2009, Jim Georgiou, then president of the community, made a handover to QUT of the statue of Lady Diamantina Bowen.

The tour will consist of a morning or afternoon tea hosted on the verandah of Old Government House and will take approximately 120 minutes. Cost of the tour is $25.00 per person or $22.00 for group bookings (10 or more people).

Old Government House was constructed between 1860 and 1862 just after Queensland received separation from New South Wales; the house being Queensland's first public building. The House was both a private dwelling and an official state office for Governor Bowen and continued to be the home of another eleven Queensland Governors and their families until 1910.

As parking is scarce on weekends and during university semesters, it is best to take public transport to travel to this event. This is a history lesson you will not want to miss.
