Enjoy tea time talk time and twinsets at the Bower
One of the great weekend pastimes in Melbourne is discovering an unusual watering hole or cafe in amongst its suburban nooks and crannies. It's a game I like to play, trying find those intriguing cafes and I know I'm not the only one.
Lady Bower is one such place, tucked into the side of Marchant Avenue in Reservoir off Broadway Street shopping strip.
If you don't know about it, you won't know it's there - the only thing that gives it away are the tables and chairs out the front. The exterior is even painted black. I think that's the way the locals like it.
Once up close, you can tell the owners have a sense of humour. The decor is best described as a cross between mad hatter's tea party meets grandma's crockery closet. There's astro turf, garden furniture, more floral tea sets than you can poke a stick at, and dainty delicacies served for your tasting pleasure.
Every time I have gone there, it's never empty. With rising housing prices closer to the city, more young creatives are making Reservoir their home and with cafés like Lady Bower catering to their needs, it's a sure sign gentrification is on its way.
As for the food, its naughty and sweet offerings include vanilla rice pudding with rice, poached peaches, raspberries and a raspberry sauce, carrot cake, chocolate cake and ginger bread yo-yos. There's a kids menu and sandwiches menu with various fillings including roast chicken, home made mayonnaise, avocado seeded bread or meatballs, swiss cheese, rocket salad, smokey sauce on a turkish bread and other choices.
There's an all day breakfast, which is one of the better civilised inventions around and breakfast of champions which includes bacon, poached eggs, chorizo beans, meatballs, rosemary mushrooms and toast.
With drinks like ice tea with lemongrass or mint, strawberry spritzer, lime spritzer or fruit punch, Lady Bower is like a summer's day picnic no matter what season you visit.
