Singer-songwriter and Hammond organist Lachy Doley is a musician's musician. When not fronting his own band, the Lachy Doley Group, he's spent ample time playing keys for the likes of Jimmy Barnes, Powderfinger, Jimmy Little, The Beautiful Girls and The Widowbirds.

On September 27, he released his second album, SOS: Singer Organ Soul, and on Thursday October 3, he'll be launching it at The Vanguard, Newtown before touring the East Coast.

Since releasing his debut album in 2011, Doley has played more than 100 gigs and festivals with his band. SOS, shying away from studio tricks, captures the dynamic and spontaneity of playing live.

'The new album has been a conscious effort to record the band with the energy and spirit of when we play live,' he told us. 'We went into Jimmy Barnes's studio and laid down all the original tracks we'd been playing live, in about four days max. It really does capture the madness and excitement of our gigs, and I couldn't be happier. In fact, if you added some crowd noise you would think it was a live show somewhere.'

As well as being highly skilled musicians in their own right, the band members have developed the powerful musical empathy that develops when excessive time is spent on the road. 'Sometimes it's hard to pin point exactly why a group works so well together,' Doley comments. 'I believe it has just as much to do with the love between the members as it does the ability. Jan and I have been playing consistently for the past three years or so and instinctively know what each other is going to play. He is a killer young bass player, with so much music running through his veins - it just makes everything a pleasure, on and off stage. Add in Adam Church on the drums, a powerhouse with an almost teenage enthusiasm, and the three of us become greater that the sum of our parts - a band where we feed from each other's energy to create great music and a great time.'

Of the ten tracks on SOS, which were released one-by-one over the course of ten weeks, Doley's favourite is 'Six Feet Under'. 'It's a song all about reassuring myself I'm on the right path,' he explains, 'knowing I would never be happy doing anything else but writing and playing music. My favourite line from the song sums it all up, really: "Never made no back up plans in case I ended up using them". It also features my best mate, Simon Meli [The Widowbirds' front man], who's on a parallel journey to myself, so I thought it would be fitting to do a duet for the track.'

The Lachy Doley Group will play at The Vanguard, Newtown, on Thursday October 3, before touring the East Coast. SOS is available on iTunes
