Sun 20 May 2018
Many first time visitors to the gorgeous old mansion in Caulfield North comment that they never knew Labassa existed. That's understandable, given that it's tucked away in a side street of the leafy suburb.
While its architectural features are a must-see for anyone interested in the creativity and beauty, it's the story of who lived in the mansion in its many re-incarnations that's most fascinating.
For the first 56 years, Labassa was home to several wealthy families. Then in the 1920s it was converted into flats and became home to many migrants - from British settlers and Europeans to Holocaust survivors. They lived together, sharing a "
harmonious and supportive community".
On Sunday the 20th of May, you can come and learn about Labassa's fascinating story. Plus, for the very first time, you can view the caretaker's flat. Emily Brearley was caretaker of Labassa for 43 years and this viewing is exclusive for May.
The tea rooms will be open with delicious sandwiches, scones and cakes.
Take a tour and check out the fantastic view from the tower for a gold coin donation.
