Asking a foodie to name their favourite dish would be the equivalent of asking a DJ to name their favourite song. It's a question that doesn't have a singular answer without first narrowing down an infinite number of hypotheticals: what style, what's the occasion, what's the vibe, what's the weather like outside, what colour is your underwear at the time, and so forth. It's impossible to just pick one.

What's your poison? My ultimate go-to for comfort is coffee with bonus points if it includes chocolate. When I'm in dire need of divine indulgence and rejuvenation, my absolute favourite soul soother is one each of La Veen's 'Barista Starter' and 'Deconstructed Tiramisu' (fun fact: 'tiramisu' translates to "pick me up"). The former gift from the heavens lends its name from La Veen's morning ritual before business hours whern the baristas test and taste each preparation of coffee to ensure absolute perfection. Now there's a job I'd be happily volunteering for each and every day - %%anyone else inspired to make a career change?

The 'Barista Starter' serves a portion of a Cold Brew, Cold Batch, a choice of either a Flat White or Coffee Granita and an Espresso. If you're anything like me and you are bordering on having a brain aneurysm from the sheer excitement at the thought of this, then I'd suggest taking a seat for this next part.

For the rest of May, this Barista Starter is available for only $10.00. Tears of joy were unashamedly wept as coffee-lovers rejoiced all over Perth.

I could not find fault with the entire tasting plate, even if I tried. And believe me, with more caffeine coursing through my veins than blood by the time I had finished it, I could figuratively feel my synapses firing. The waitperson took the time to explain to me why each bean was chosen for each method, and the soda water served as a pleasant palate cleanser.

La Veen source their poison from 5 Senses Coffee who are everything wholesome, ethical and proper that you want in your coffee: fair trade, organic, heirloom etc. Each serve of coffee had its bean profiled and flavour-matched for each preparation to best highlight its qualities, with single-origins from Colombia, Ethiopia, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.

Where to begin with the Deconstructed Tiramisu… If I were to be hit by a bus right after eating that, I could confidently say I would have died a happy person. From the base, it started with a generous smear of tempered chocolate topped with a crunchy chocolate soil and just a hint of salt. What really stood out for me were the savoiardi ladyfinger biscuits which were uncharacteristically dry and crispy with just a cheeky swirl of hot espresso, as opposed to the biscuits being soaked through with coffee and/or liqueur. This crunch, layered between perfect quenelles of silky and dense mascarpone, gave the dish depth and character which screamed 'upper class gourmet' rather than 'soggy from sitting in the fridge for too long'. And just in case this dish wasn't aesthetically pleasing enough on its own, the dish was garnished with crushed pistachios and tiny bean blossoms.

On any given day, I generally wouldn't feel comfortable venturing onto King Street to share a sidewalk with the upper echelons of the prestigious inner city crowd (or appropriately attired, for that matter, as I'm more of a dress-for-comfort than high-end-fashion kinda gal). But the cosy, rustic venue paired with the knowledgeable and chatty staff make for a warm and tantalizingly inviting surrounding.

Do feel free to come say 'hi' if you happen to see me lingering around here. I have a hard time resisting my urges when it comes to all the indulgences this place has to offer.
