Melbourne has so much to offer. I love experiencing new places and events and sharing them with you. I have an interest in gluten free, vegan and vegetarian diets so I will let you know if you these can be catered for in my reviews.

Put on your Mexican hat and get in there

Hola, have you been to La Tortilleria yet?

You really must, no really. Mexican will never be the same for you again after this experience.

La Tortilleria makes their own tortilla, from fresh corn in the traditional way that has been done for centuries. It is made with care and there are no preservatives or additives. It's gluten free, cholesterol free and with no trans fat. It's made with love and trust me you can feel it.

The wait staff are welcoming. I'm pretty sure they are authentic Mexican too. On the way to our table, in the back room, we noticed all the tables were full. This little gem is thriving in the previously industrial part of Kensington. That wasn't what I was expecting somehow.

We ordered a vegan set menu so our hosts could show off the range of offerings. There was a table of nine of us, all vegan and we felt very welcome, especially when we spotted the little blurb on the menu.

vegan, mexican, cafe, restaurant, tortillas
Note on the menu

I also noted that all items are 99.9% gluten free, and free range eggs and meats are used wherever possible. Doesn't it just give you a warm fuzzy feeling?

As we sampled the food, the sound of "hmms..and yums" were blissfully murmured. If you are used to going to the Americanised Mexican of the Taco Bill variety, this is something else. Freshness you can taste.

We had a variety of quesedillas, all with housemade guacamole, salsa and sauces. Some of the varieties we sampled were:

mushrooms filled
vegan chizoro & cheese
beans & vegan cheese

Of course you could get them all with regular cheese and meat. There are lots of options and the staff are only too happy to help you decide.

La Tortilleria is marked by a mural on the outside but noted on the inside for its quality. This place will become the standard to which you hold all other Mexican restaurants.

It is quesadilla, not quesedillas, and chorizo, not chizoro. A bit of proofreading does wonders!
