Growing up on the border of Mexico in San Diego, we had wonderful access to Central and South American foods. Black beans and plantains (a type of sweet banana that is fried) were staples of our diets.
In Sydney, I've often craved this type of food and not often been able to find it. Imagine my delight when came across La Reina
The Queen of Venezuelan Arepas at
Rozelle Collector's Market .
Venezuela is famous for arepas, a delicious type of corn cake. La Reina takes an even more delicious twist adding super foods like beetroot and kale to the traditional arepas. This makes for a gorgeous colour and vibrancy to this incredible dish.
This unique food stall has delicious pulled meats, chicken, beef, pork and even vegetarian and vegan options. The side dishes are black beans and plantains with a tangy delicious Venezuelan cheese.
The owners Ybrahim Camero and Gilda Rivas are incredibly friendly and welcoming, even offering free samples so Sydneysiders can experience what arepas are all about. Once you try an arepa, you won't be able to order anything else- they are a must have dish.
It is a refreshingly healthy option, completely gluten free, mouth watering meats and tasty plantains and black beans.
Currently La Reina is available at
Glebe Markets and
Paddington Markets on Saturdays and Rozelle Collectors Markets on both Saturdays and Sundays.
The popularity of La Reina in Sydney means they will be opening a dedicated restaurant in Newtown in a few months time.
