La Quinta Mexican Cafe & Bar

Yesterday afternoon my partner and I decided to head to
La Quinta Mexican Cafe and Bar at Builmba. In a comedy of errors type weekend we had originally decided to spend a beautifully sunny Brisbane Saturday at South Bank attending GOMA's tremendously disappointing Winter Design Markets and having a hearty pub lunch at the Plough Inn. Unfortunately the Balmy Army foiled our plans by filling every restaurant, cafe and bar in the vicinity with a sea of Red jerseys.
La Quinta is much raved about on our side of town and I must say, whilst the food and drinks were great, I'm not sure I get it. The premises were nice enough and on the super trendy Oxford street but the ambiance was a little lacking. Perhaps its better for dinner? The staff were helpful enough when asked but service was a little lackluster.
Food wise I was happy. La Quinta serves up a nice range of Tex-Mex type meals with a bit more emphasis on the Mex rather than the stodgy Tex offerings of establishments such as Cactus Jacks. I enjoyed a fabulous glass of house made Sangria but my partner (who is unfortunately a bit of a bourbon snob these days) was told the best thing he could have was wild turkey. Not a good start.
However for those that are beer aficionados they certainly had a very broad range to chose from. As it was getting late in the day we skipped entrees and went straight for mains. The other half enjoyed a steak served with with a tequila, poblano and peppercorn sauce. The sauce was to die for but the steak was a little underdone although apparently still quite tasty. I went for the lamb and goats cheese enchiladas and was very pleasantly surprised. They were actually quite light and delicious and nowhere near the cheese drenched mess that I have been previously presented elsewhere.
So all in all we ended up leaving with happy tastebuds and stomachs but all in all I can't say I feel as though we genuinely received our $70 worth. I think I will be keeping my Mexican cuisine allegiances firmly bedded with Cleveland's Funky Mexican Cantina for now.
