promotes itself as a Gladesville institution, and when you've been dishing up succulent, fresh seafood for more than 20 years that's probably a fair enough claim. This family-run restaurant is an Italian seafood eatery, with owner George Colosi frequenting the morning fish markets to ensure freshness.

The modern and uncluttered decor at La Perla tells you this place is all about casual dining. We last visited on a Tuesday night, which was reasonably quiet, but when La Perla is full it can get a little bit noisy.

But who cares about the decor? What you really want to know about is the food. There's a decent range of entrees to choose from, starting with garlic bread ($4) and bruschetta ($6) and continuing on to more staple seafood options like Sydney rock oysters ($16) and tonno carpacci ($20).

The calamari fritti ($20) is especially worth sampling. You'll also need a drink or two to go with your entrees, and it's pleasing to see that when you order wine by the glass, those glasses come almost filled to the brim. Beers start from $5.

Moving on to the mains , the boneless flathead in beer batter with shoestring chips ($29) is always a favourite, while the grilled swordfish ($36) and the snapper whole or fillet grilled with seasonal vegetables ($36) sound enticing.

Spanish prawns ($30 in main size), consisting of prawn cutlets fried in a cast iron pan with garlic, chilli and paprika, are beautiful and come with crusty bread for dipping. There's also a handful of pasta and risotto options on offer, with my pick being the penne al granchio ($26). This delicious dish features penne with crab meat, garlic, chilli, basil, white wine and freshly chopped tomato.

If you've still got room for dessert, the creme brulee ($9) is a winner, or you can indulge in a scoop or three of gelato.

I've always had prompt and friendly service at La Perla, which always helps when you're recommending a place to friends. As it is located on busy Victoria Road, parking can be a pain on some nights, but a couple of laps of the area will usually yield a spot that's relatively close by.
