Try this delicious creperie with friends and family
There are some hip new foodie venues opening in Adelaide's western suburbs, with La Lorientaise Creperie becoming a popular choice. Everything in this cafe is inspired by the French way of cooking and eating pancakes. The cafe is suitable for eating at any time of the day, with choices for a main meal, brunch or afternoon tea.

We attended the cafe on a weekend for lunch. By the way, this is a top spot to take your parents for a simple and fuss-free outing. It would be ideal for a birthday or Mother's Day afternoon tea. The food is served quickly and is more than satisfying. French pancakes are not thick and fluffy like American pancakes and not at all like small English pikelets. The authentic French crepes are large, very thin, somewhat crisp on the edges and a little delicate. They are cooked very quickly on a large round griddle plate and filled with a savoury or sweet filling. Or you can have plain crepes with jam, syrup, or lemon and sugar. The menu also features homemade croques and croissants.

The menu boasts a large a savoury crepe list with breakfast choices such as ham, eggs, mushrooms and more. For something different, try the salmon with sautéed leek or scallops. Goats cheese, which is similar to fetta cheese, is included in some savoury dishes. For the sweet selection, you can have many fruit fillings such as apple, pear, strawberries or banana, accompanied with nuts and coconut on some.
The sweet crepes are served with fresh cream and ice-cream. Here you can also try the classic French crepe dessert with orange and GGrand Marnier liqueur. [I]Ooh la la[ /I] - that would make a special dish to share on a date night. Some sweet crepes are topped with a drizzle of fine Belgian chocolate. Making a selection from the 30 crepe combos was not easy.

Now, many of my subscribers know I am always in search of some good gluten-free venues and was thrilled to see this menu has many gluten-free choices. All the savoury crepes are made with buckwheat flour, which is not a wheat product at all. This batter has a thicker texture and holds the filling well. It has a darker colour when cooked and a nutty flavour, which is a good balance for the fillings. Hence all the savoury crepes are gluten-free. But if you prefer a sweet crepe, they can make these gluten-free for you to order. Even the ice cream is gluten-free. I know because the staff and I checked the container.

It has been a very long time since I had pancakes at a cafe, so I ordered a GF stewed pear crepe and a cappuccino. My coffee arrived tepid and unpalatable, so I took it back and asked for it to be made hot this time. The barista was a bit taken aback. My new coffee was good, my crepe was delicious and I will surely be back to try one another crepe from the menu.
A fun part of dining at this cafe is you can walk around the store, and watch your crepe being cooked through a glass partition. There are tables for 2 to 4 people around the sides and in the centre one long table that would fit about 10 diners. There is also a few small tables out the front. There is a wide selection of coffee, teas, milkshakes and juice to drink. You can also pop by for a sundae and even a banana split a-la-French style. The menus are written in French and English and many of the staff speak French, so you can brush up on your French when ordering. The staff are friendly and efficient and do their best to help you with your ordering.

When arriving on Queen Street, I found the cafe a little hard to find as the shopfront is built onto an old house. There is no sign on the building. A small signage board was outside on the sidewalk, which I did not see until I was leaving. The building is painted grey with large windows under the original veranda of the house. You will find La Lorientaise Creperie on the corner of Elizabeth St, (which is an extension of Queen St off Port Road) and Robert Street. The Queen St cafes and shops are a very short walk north, from the Croydon Station on the Outer Harbour line, only a few minutes from the city. You could easily spend an hour or two in the area, having a crepe, looking at the other stores and stopping at the playground near the railway line with the kids.
