La La Land is a fabulous film which is fun, fun, fun. It's a romantic musical with a strong comedy drama element. Mia (Emma Stone) is an aspiring actress who falls in love with a struggling jazz musician Sabastian (Ryan Gosling).
The movie is split into seasons so we see the pair meet, go on a first date, live together and then try to balance their romance with their own hopes and dreams. Their hard work starts to pay off and they are forced to make difficult decisions about their relationship.
I'm not a huge fan of musicals but this one had catchy tunes and is based around a decently written storyline. The jazz and piano music provides a funky soundtrack.
Both leads show terrific acting skills, particularly Stone. They might not be professional standard singers nor dancers, but I don't mind a little imperfection. The costumes are primarily block colours but I love the palette choice.
The film is an original script (not based on adapted play or opera) from Academy Award-nominated writer and director, Damien Chazelle (Whiplash).
La La Land is a musical with intelligence, but please don't tell anyone but I've already bought the soundtrack.
La La Land releases in cinemas around Australia on Monday 26th December 2016.
