It is always very exciting to discover a fabulous restaurant, especially when you aren't really looking. That is what my husband and I did last Friday night. We found a hidden little gem along the popular Kedron Brook Road in Wilston.

After dropping our son off for soccer training, we decided to look for somewhere to have dinner and ended up at La Cena. We were tossing up between Asian, Chinese or Mediterranean...

La Cena looked unassuming and causal, so we wandered in. We were a little wary at first as we were the only customers. But this soon changed, as within the next hour it become very busy. Obviously the locals were aware of this hidden gem.

It was lucky for us as we beat the rush. This meant we had exceptional service from our lovely waitress. We elected to sit "outdoors" and was pleased to know that their outdoors was in fact a lovely garden area at the back of the restaurant.

The ambience of the garden was added to by led fairy light and candles. So the atmosphere was great but how was the food?

Our very friendly and attentive waitress was very helpful in our meal selections for the evening. She explained each item on their special's board and gave us her recommendations. This got our mouths watering.

Over a glass of Savingon Blanc, we made our choices. We chose to share the mixed entree platter which consisted of grilled haloumi, prawns, calamari, and lamb koftas with flat bread, hummus and salad. Since it was a Friday during Lent we don't eat meat, so we were able to substitute the lamb for extra prawns. The entree was good for two or one person as a main meal.

The entree was extremely delicious and the calamari was lightly battered and it literally melted in your mouth. For the mains, my husband had the fish of the day - barramundi with potato and vegetables.

On the menu there was three fish to choose for the fish of the day. This evening the choices were between barramundi, John Dory and salmon. The barramundi was perfectly cooked with crispy skin and a side of fresh vegetables.

My meal was the vegetarian, stuffed zucchini, with salad and yoghurt. We both were very impressed with the meals. Our evening turned out to be very good indeed.

So for La Cena, we rated 2 thumbs up for atmosphere, 2 thumbs up for service and definitely 2 thumbs up for the food. This is a restaurant that we will return to with the rest of the family.
