Put on your dancing shoes and dance the night away
Everyone loves to dance. Most of us (me included) are not professionals and as much as we try to copy the moves from So You Think You Can Dance, we still seem to fall short. However when we hear those catchy beats, we can't help but move to the music. One such place to let loose is La B del M , a Cuban Restaurant situated in the heart of Sydney City.
My husband and I visited this bar and restaurant on a Friday night. After showing our IDs at the door, we entered into a loud and fairly packed restaurant/bar. Split on 2 levels, La B del M boasts of 2 bars and a restaurant. While the bar on top is more for the people looking to relax and talk, the main action happens on the lower level with a much busier bar and a live Cuban band, Lorenzo y su Swing band (Thursdays - Saturday). My husband and I made our way to this bar and it took almost 20 minutes to get a drink! While here, you must try the mojitos, which are the house speciality ($10). The dance floor was filled with people just relaxing and enjoying the music. After a few songs, the band took a break and some pre taped music was put on. The dancing couples were not deterred by the lack of live musicians and the fun and dancing continued.
While the restaurants does not take reservations from groups smaller than 8 people, you can put down your name on arrival and they call you when they have a table ready. In about half an hour of arrival, we received a call and we tore ourselves from the dance floor and made our way upstairs. Like the bar, the restaurant had a fun and vibrant ambience. Our waitress for the night was very efficient and prompt with our order. We decided to try the Vegetarian Paella for two ($49) and the Patatas Bravas ($6). To us, the food was mediocre. The rice on the bottom of a pan was quite burnt and the whole dish seemed to lack flavour.
Overall, I think the main attraction of La B del M is undoubtedly their cocktails and their live band. While not a place to visit for an intimate romantic dinner, this is a place to visit for a fun and lively night with a special someone or with friends. We found the food over priced and unsatisfactory, however it may just have been an off day for the chef - but if you are in the area, do check out this place and don't forget to bring along your dancing shoes!
