Kyoto Café is a quaint and humble restaurant located in Town Square, a newly refurbished meeting area located outside Eastland shopping centre. Kyoto Café introduces an authentic taste of Japan, not only the food, but the modern Japanese style décor and friendly staff will make you feel like you are in Japan even if just for a while.
There is a wide selection of dishes to choose from, from the usual entrees, snacks and mains to tea ceremony, sushi boat and even matcha latte. For those who haven't had matcha latte before, it is a must try. It's a fragrant latte with a hint of green tea that leaves you wanting more, and as an added bonus it comes with a meringue biscuit that goes perfectly well.
If you're looking for a filling lunch or dinner you might want to grab a curry don, ranging from $12-$15 and with a selection of toppings to choose from - chicken, vegetable, karaage and more. If you're more of a noodle person there is also a range of ramen, udon and soba to choose from.
Then there's also the Bento box set, you can choose your main and it comes with chirashi (ちらし), which literally means 'scattered'. It is a bowl of rice mixed with sashimi. It also comes with tempoura prawn and vegetables, potato salad, roast duck paper roll and chiwanmushi (茶碗蒸し), which is a Japanese steamed egg. You get all this for about $20 to $25 depending on the main you choose.
There are also crepe options available. You might have come across sweet crepes but it's not often that you find savoury ones. There are two savoury options including the teriyaki chicken or salmon, both going perfectly with the thin crepe, fragrant rice and fresh lettuce.
If you're after a light snack or lunch there are the range of barbeque skewers to choose from, ranging from about $3 to $5 per skewer. Or you could try Japanese snacks including the popular takoyaki, croquettes, tempura prawn, okonomiyaki and much more from $5.00 to $9.80 per dish.
Teriyaki Chicken Bao $5.00 - A fusion option at Kyoto Cafe
As expected from Japanese cuisine, the food was simple, delicious and very well presented. It is a must return to restaurant if you are seeking an authentic Japanese meal, whether it be for a cup of matcha latte, dessert, lunch or dinner.
It is located under 30km east of Melbourne CBD and is conveniently close to public transport (trains and buses) for those who are travelling into the area. For those close by, Kyoto Café will definitely become one of your frequent spots.
