The award winning Kurilpa Community Childcare Centre is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Borne out of necessity during World War II, Kurilpa was created during one of the most challenging eras Australian families would face as soldiers left wives 'holding the babies'

Today the philosophies underpinning Kurilpa's existence are as strong as ever: making best-quality, flexible child care available to working families and others who need it most. And the tradition of 'doing it ourselves' still continues. Kurilpa is one of the few stand-alone not-for-profit centres run by a volunteer management committee made up of parents. We're not part of a chain, we can make decisions that best suits our needs and that means everyone from staff, to parents to kids are that much closer to the decision makers in the organisation, Committee President and parent, Sarah Warner said.

This is an invite from all the Kurilpa Family; past, present and future as well as the wider Brisbane community to join the celebration.

The idea to offer care for children came from a group of politically active women in working-class West End who, with strong left-wing beliefs, became intent on translating their commitment to social justice into real benefits for many women who'd began entering the workforce. Unfortunately it was attacked as a communist plot against family values, Director, Marisa Phillips said.

Passion and perseverance have been enduring and fundamental qualities at Kurilpa, which in early days was run by volunteers with donated goods. Fast forward to the late 1990's when swathes of child-care centres across the country folded and the federal government slashed funding to community-based care the Kurilpa 'family' once again stood united, even when it meant anxious parents paying fees in advance or in cash to ensure staff wages could be met each week.

It will be a day to proudly celebrate our history but also to showcase the wonderfully supportive and enriching environment we provide the current generation. As we reflect on the thousands of little lives we've helped shape I dearly hope we'll reunite with some familiar faces from the past, Director, Marisa Phillips said

In 2013 Kurilpa was awarded by Australian Family Early Education Award 'Early Childhood service of the year'. This year Kurilpa was assessed and rated against the National Quality Standard, by the Office of Early Childhood and received a result of 'Exceeding' in all seven quality areas.

This momentous milestone will be celebrated by opening its doors and hosting a mini-fete with great food and drinks, as well as games, entertainment and trash and treasure on offer. There will also be a children's art auction. Some raffle prizes on offer are haircut and style voucher from Chop, handmade quilts, one month's membership to Goodlife gyms, a photography session.

Clear your calendar and celebrate a community-run child care centre that defied all odds to become Queensland's number one.
