Kuril Dhagun – The Place of the Water Rat.

Two landmarks stand out – the beautiful Kurilpa Bridge that resembles a sailing boat with innumerable sails and the enormous elephant with its nose in the earth with the little water rat running along side.

If you have been fascinated by either of the two, there is an interesting walk which is just for you.

Kuril Dhagun is the Indigenous Knowledge Centre and it is tucked away at the back of the Queensland State Library.

I went along to one of the walks and really enjoyed listening to the history of this particular area and its importance to aboriginal people.

On the first Wednesday of each month you can go along to the Centre to join a walk from 10.30 – 11.30 am which takes you along the path from the Centre to the river, taking in Kurilpa Bridge and its historical connection with the aboriginal groups in the area and the path leading away from the centre. It's an informative hour and one in which you can pick up important information about the centre and its activities.

This month in February it will also host tours on a Tuesday from 2 to 3pm of the Centre and all it has to offer.

While there go along to the exhibition of "A Thousand Words" which is a fascinating insight into portraits of indigenous people. This exhibition is on until the 17th of May 2015.These are portraits of artists Cheryl Creed and Nickeema Williams of many of the aboriginal and Torres island community personalities in Queensland.

There are workshops working with textiles, print making and weaving as well as jewellery making.

Check out the website for dates and times.
