Three experiences at the one location. That's what you encounter at the Kuranga Native Nursery and Paperbark Café at 118 York Road Mt. Evelyn. Plants, food and gifts.

It's a horticultural experience just wandering around the nursery. Kuranga claims to have the largest range of native Australian plants anywhere, and after only a few minutes of wandering the well laid out displays, it would be difficult to prove otherwise.

Ever heard of an epacris mucronulata or a lasiopessalum baueri. No, either have I, but they have them. They also have gum trees and grevilleas.

Even if you don't know what you are looking for, you will find it there. Every plant is labelled and grouped in sizes, such as ground cover, small shrubs, large shrubs, small trees large trees, etc. There are always wandering staff to assist.

Scattered all around the garden are hundreds of metal garden ornaments of all shapes and sizes.

No matter what time of the year you are there, you will always find a plant in bloom to add colour to your garden all year round.

Enter the fernery and you could almost be in a miniature rain forest, with a large number of different ferns available, both big and small.

Feeling peckish? The on-site Paperbark Café will alleviate your food cravings. They are open for breakfast and lunch and everything in between. Really good coffee and a large range of slices and cakes for morning or afternoon tea. They offer a seasonal menu featuring local ingredients and a subtle native bush food twist.

I was there for a late breakfast, starting with a hot coffee. It was a cold day and holding the coffee cup with both hands warmed the inner and outer me.

The coffee was so nice I ordered a second one to go with my meal. I was pleased to be able to order a 'custom' meal rather than exactly what was on the menu, always a good sign of good customer service. The café wasn't crowded so my order arrived very quickly.

Their gift shop is well stocked with a diverse range of Australian made gifts, many unusual and unique. I thought the prices were a little high on some items, but can you put a price on uniqueness?

The products available range from preserves, crockery, pottery, books, stuffed Australian animal toys, soaps. I even spied a couple of tea pots among the pottery items.

If you look up you will see a multitude of wind chimes hanging from the ceiling, just waiting for a rush of air.

If you are looking for something different for a gift then this is certainly the place for it, if you can bear to part with it after purchasing.

Nursery and café open at 8.30 every morning until 5.00 pm., seven days of the week.

You can grow it, eat it or give it.
