This hidden gem in Brisbane's southside is convenient, accessible and in a small, friendly setting. If you're looking for fresh vegetables, that morning coffee hit, a cleansing breakfast (nudie juice) or a hangover brunch (footlong German sausage), this may be the place for you. And while you're there, you may get to do some early Christmas shopping for that "hard-to-buy-for" aunt or in-law. You'll thank yourself later for not having to set foot in a manic Westfield mall in December.
You'll find stalls, large and small, selling a wide selection of everyday fruit and vegetables (potatoes, pumpkin, apples, bananas), herbs (lemongrass, turmeric, Australian garlic, coriander, Thai basil), and less common vegetables like banana flowers, flat leaf kale, white corn, purple taro and fennel. Some stalls are focused on particular items such as tomatoes only, or apples from Stanthorpe, or just eggs. The avocado stall has Mt Tamborine fruit - ask for a taste test to see which variety takes your fancy before buying a bulk pack.
Other specialty stalls have honey and bee products, as well as berries and mangoes, and there is a gourmet meat van.
At the rear of the markets, you'll find a host of food and beverages on offer: Turkish gozlemes, grilled German sausages, Asian street food, calamari, refreshing iced teas, fruit juice made to order, coffee and doughnuts. And why not take home some treats from Dullah's (specialty cakes, gourmet biscuits and savoury snacks)? The pink snowballs, a South African recipe, is highly recommended.
