The latest exhibition at Mitchell Fine Art Gallery, Fortitude Valley, displays the work of two artists, Kudditji Kngwarreye and Idris Muphy.
Born in the remote centre of Australia in the late 1920s, Kudditji Kngwarreye didn't start painting till the 1980s. In this collection, titled 'My Country', the paintings of bold colour depict his homelands of the Central Desert, where he was a senior lawman and custodian of Anmatyerre tradition.
Gallery director, Mike Mitchell, describes Kngwarreye as an artist without inhibition. According to Mike, Kngwarreye "painted ferociously, his use of colour was so natural and completely intuitive."
Sydney-based artist, Idris Murphy, was invited by the gallery to curate a response to Kngwarreye's paintings. His gestural works complement those of Kngwarreye's, addressing the themes of country and attachment to the Australian landscape.
It's a beautiful, impactful exhibition and one not to be missed.
Mitchell Fine Art Gallery is open Monday to Saturday and welcomes visitors for this free exhibition. Social distancing measures are in place with ample space within the gallery.
Onsite parking is available at the front of the gallery.
If you can't visit in person, you can arrange a "Zoom" around the exhibition virtually (or via FaceTime). Contact the gallery for more details or with any enquiries about the art.
