If birds, botanic gardens, blooming wildflowers and bushwalks interest you then a great place for all this would be the Ku-Ring-Gai Wildflower Gardens. Located at Mona Vale road in St Ives this 123 hectares of natural bushland maintains and protects native plants, birds and animals and features heathland and tall forest, sandstone outcrops, ponds, gullies and waterfalls. The garden is open from 8am to 4pm on all days of the week and is reachable by taking a Forest Coachline bus to St Ives from Gordon station on the North shore line.

The gardens are filled with activities to do for children and adults alike. There are picnic gardens and barbecue facilities near the visitors centre where you can enjoy a picnic lunch amidst laughing kookaburras. There are many long and short bushwalking tracks which you can explore either with a guide or on a self guided tour. There is also a wheelchair friendly track, the Senses track. There are some frog-hunt and bird walking activities that you can participate in or else you may just wander around to the beautiful ponds and stunning waterfalls in between some of Australia's finest flora. For children there is a playground with play equipment and a fern house to keep them occupied.

Some of the bird varieties you may encounter are Superb Fairy-wren, Red-browed Finch, Rainbow Lorikeets and Little Red Wattlebirds. The brochure lists the entire list and you can spend quite a few hours hunting for a peek at them in the garden. You can also organize an adventurous bush birthday party for children here, which will involve a day out at the bushgarden and some bush activities and education.

The council organizes wildflower festivals from time to time that offers many activities like guided bush walks, plant and wildlife talks, plant displays and other forms of entertainment.

With so many plants, flowers and birds to admire and photograph in their natural setting, the Wildflower garden has much to keep the entire family busy and engrossed in its natural beauty. Do check out some photographs here before your visit.
