This was a gem tucked away in the country. Located about an hour from Melbourne, and not far from Ballarat, this day trip was an absolute delight. is Australia's only medieval theme park and is great for both children and adults alike. Open weekends, Victorian school holidays and public holidays (except Christmas day), this is well worth the short travel from town for a day. I took this opportunity with my family this school holidays. Upon arrival to the great castle, we had to cross a drawbridge to gain access over the moat and were instantly transported back in time to the medieval era, and were thus addressed as 'Lord ' and 'Lady.' We were handed a pamphlet by a peasant with a map of the park and necessary information along with a schedule of attractions and shows that would be running throughout the day. Armed with this, we pushed on into the medieval village.

We were entertained all day with shows in the Jesters theatre, horsemanship performances and jousting tournaments by knights in the castle arena. We saw a blacksmith hard at work, peasants, and a prince wooing a fair lady. We tried to pull the sword from the stone, got lost in the castle maze, got put in the stocks and enjoyed perusing the torture museum & dungeon. Also on display were stables, an ancient cemetery, and an animal nursery amongst other attractions.

Extra activities included pony rides, carriage rides, archery, face painting, calligraphy and knight training to name a few.

When we went, we took a picnic rug and our own lunch and ate on the grass area by the castle playground, but there is Mt Inn Café & the Ale House where food and drink can be purchased. The tooth fairy lolly shop also sells sweets, drinks and ice cream. A coin-operated barbeque is also available for use in the rotunda. There are also picnic tables in various locations of the park.

Tickets are $35.00 for a general pass and includes most attractions and activities, however, discounts are available for concession or large groups. Tickets can be booked in advance or upon entrance to the castle. Parking is not an issue, as plenty is available. Toilets and a designated smoking area are also included in the park.

Medieval accommodation is also available at the castle, as well as packages that include murder mystery dinner and medieval feast.

This made for a truly memorable day out for our family, and we were so happy we finally made it to as it had been on our to-do list for quite a while. We found this trip fun, entertaining and educational.
