Kryal Castle Celebrates 50 Years of Jousting in Australia

Kryal Castle in Ballarat will play host to a grand gathering of armoured knights, competing for the coveted title of jousting champion in celebration of the 50th anniversary of jousting in Australia. This thrilling event is none other than the annual Victorian Medieval Festival, to be over the weekend of November 18-19, 2023.

This year's festival promises to surpass all previous editions. Attendees can expect awe-inspiring Viking battles, heart-pounding jousting tournaments, and a living history village showcasing life in the Middle Ages. Additionally, there will be a medieval catapult, a bustling night food market and tavern, and a plethora of delightful activities for the little ones.

This milestone occasion, marking half a century of jousting in Australia, is anticipated to draw thousands to the Central Highlands of Victoria, just an hour's drive from Melbourne. Bart Hamilton, the General Manager, expressed his excitement for the festival, emphasising how it authentically resurrects the bygone era.

"This year's Victorian Medieval Festival will offer families a brilliant blend of education and entertainment, immersing them in the fascinating world of the Middle Ages," Mr. Hamilton remarked.

Resident knight of Kryal Castle, Phil Leitch, declared that this year's jousting competition will be the largest ever witnessed in Australia. He reminisced about the inaugural public joust in 1973, featuring the Harris Brothers and a tour by the British Jousting Society, a momentous event that marked the inception of the sport in Australia.

Since then, Australian jousting has flourished, boasting over 30 national competitors. These formidable jousters will charge into battle on their majestic steeds, delivering thunderous blows to opponents' shields in a breathtaking homage to the sport's history.

"Among the twelve jousters competing, we have three former world champions, along with Australian representatives and a wealth of emerging talent. It will be a fiercely contested competition and a privilege to commemorate fifty years of jousting in this country," Leitch declared.
