On Friday, May 12, The Queensland Multicultural Centre in conjunction with BEMAC and Utopia Entertainment will host a fantastic K-Pop cultural event as part of their World Music Cafe series that will involve pop-up stores, live music and dance performances, K-Beauty demonstrations and a performance by the wonderful Crystal Yi. Korean pop culture is taking over the world, get along to Kangaroo Point and find out why.



K-Pop is a term used to cover Korea's unique style of pop music. It is not a single genre of music but covers a wide variety of styles from jazz to electronica, traditional folk music through to metal. But when most people think of K-Pop they think of beats, dance moves, energetic vocals and great performances.

The highlight of the night will be Crystal Yi, from the US, but who came to international attention when she wowed the judges on the show Survival Audition K-pop Star show in Korea (shown on SBS in Australia as Kpop Star).



Local Korean acts will also perform on the day. Local group KATU, comprised mostly of Korean-Australians will delight audiences with covers of Korean pop hits as well as some original songs. The Paradise Crew will be performing a number of great dance performances from both K and J Pop.

Also Korean beauty and cosmetics company, The Face Shop, who have recently opened a store in Brisbane, will have a pop-up shop (or is that a K pop-up shop) and also be conducting demonstrations on the Korean makeup styling. Across Asia, Korean beauty products are in high demand.

The event runs from 4:30pm to 10pm and should attract quite a crowd. Full priced tickets are $25 and concession pricing is available. While you can buy tickets on the day at the venue, I highly recommend buying them in advance as this is likely to be a very popular event.

BEMAC, who hosts the World Music Cafe events, usually runs a kitchen featuring cultural appropriate food and the theatre bar will be open. But there are also a number of other options for dining in the area including The Story Bridge Hotel which has four different restaurants with a lot of items to choose from.

There are a number of options for getting to the event. Driving is pretty straight forward and there is both parking at the venue, and if that runs out, in the surrounding streets. From the city, you can take public transport, including the 232 bus or the free red ferry from Eagle Street Pier to the Holman Ferry Terminal.
