As crazy as it sounds, we went snow hunting over Christmas in Australia. Twice. And both times we were successful.

Of course, the snow wasn't actually falling, but it was there. And our kids had the time of their lives!

Hiking to the snow in Kosciuszko National Park
The first time we entertained this mad-sounding idea, was Christmas 2017. We camped at Jindabyne and went along Princess Charlotte Pass to the entrance to the Mount Kosciuszko Summit Walk. There we took the right-hand track which descended to a beautiful creek of melting snow before heading back up towards the snow-covered mountain tops.

The track took us past beautiful scenery and wildflowers while leading us up towards the unmelted snow.

When we finally reached the snow, the kids were elated! It was hot enough for them to be in shorts and t-shirts, and playing in the snow helped to cool everyone down.

Snow at Christmas? Kosciuszko National Park
We decided to go snow hunting again on Christmas Day 2019. This time we took a different track from the same carpark at the end of Princess Charlotte Pass, up to Mount Stilwell.

Again, we were not disappointed and found enough unmelted snow to play in.

Although it is unlikely that we will ever experience a true white Christmas in Australia, chasing the snow has given our family two wonderful Christmas Days, and memories to last a lifetime.
