If you enjoy challenging bushwalks, featuring a diverse range of landscapes and scenery, this walk is perfect for you.

As the name suggests, the Korogoro Headland Circuit loops from the beautiful Korogoro Creek around the headland of Hat Head. Access is from the southern side of the Hat Head footbridge. The walk is signposted as a 3.2km return walk, however, it is a challenging walk and it took us around 1.5 hours to complete.

The track is rough and steep, with limited signage, and is regarded by National Parks as a Grade 4 walk. It is recommended for experienced walkers only.

There are two starting options for this walk. You can walk via the Korogoro Creek track in a clockwise direction around the headland, or you can choose to start from The Gap and walk in an anti-clockwise direction via the ocean, which is what we did.

Along this walk, you will be rewarded with many dramatic views of the coastline, down to Hungry Hill in the south, out to the ocean east of the headland, and north towards Smoky Cape.

At the start of the walk the track is wide, even and well-maintained but before long, it narrows considerably and becomes rocky and uneven. It is also quite steep and overgrown in some sections.

It's important to be aware of wildlife on this walk. We saw a mob of kangaroos resting on the headland and we also made sure we kept an eye out for snakes on the track but were lucky not to come across any.

Just before you reach the most easterly point of the headland, there is a steep track down to a ravine with an opening out to the ocean allowing waves to crash though. It is quite a spectacular and dramatic natural landscape.

As you round the northern part of the headland, you are rewarded with stunning views of South Smoky beach and Smoky Cape in the distance. The track on this side of the headland is dotted with pandanus trees before descending in to littoral rainforest along Korogoro Creek.

This walk is suitable for experienced bushwalkers only. If you are visiting in summer, don't forget to take a hat and apply sunscreen and insect repellent before you go.

Hat Head National Park lies between Crescent Head to the south and Smoky Cape to the north. It is around 500km from both Sydney and Brisbane and about an hour's drive from Port Macquarie.

Other walks nearby include the Connor's Beach and Walking Track and Third Beach.
