A Taxi Driver

Taxi Driver is a richly imagined tribute to a Korean working class hero and is based on a true story. Man-seob is a widowed taxi driver in Seoul who struggles financially as he raises an 11 year old daughter on his own. He picks up what he thinks is an easy fare with big money and agrees to transport a foreigner paying big money, to Gwangju city and back before curfew. A trip with a German journalist with a hidden agenda, becomes a life or death struggle in the midst of the Gwangju Uprising, a critical event in modern South Korea.

I Can Speak is an unlikely friendship between Ok-boon aka the goblin granny, an elderly busybody and Min-kjae, an ambitious and fastidious young civil servant. Ok-boon terrorises Min-Kjae's place of business with complaints on a daily basis till she discovers he speaks English. Wanting to reconnect with her long lost brother in America, she proposes to stop being a terror, in exchange for English lessons. Soon the pair grow close, until long buried secrets start to surface.

I Can Speak

Stand by Me[/font] is a heart-wrenching tale of a grandfather left to raise his grandchildren Deok-gu, a 7 year old boy and his little sister Deok-hee. Their father passed away in a traffic accident and soon after they lost their mother to the father's life insurance payout. Struggling to survive as he works part time to take care of the kids, this grandfather from a country village discovers he hasn't much time left. Realising the kids are too young to take care of themselves, he prepares a present for his grandchildren, that may be their last.

There are 19 other amazing films to choose from, including the twisted tales of
[I]Forgotten and Microhabitat. Both films have Festival Guests and a Q&A session after the event, in Sydney. Forgotten is a dark and twisted violent tale of amnesia and murder, while Microhabitat is art-house about a 31 year old housekeeper who'd rather give up the roof over her head so she can keep on affording her greatest pleasures.
