There are eight Cirque du Soleil productions currently playing around the globe. And nine more across the USA.

Kooza, currently in Brisbane, started life in 2007.

There is a plot of sorts. A neophyte clown (called "the innocent") encounters "the trickster", who displays all the marvels of his world of magic, some of which are sinister. But, as with many Cirque productions, the plot is a loose device on which to showcase the skills of a horde of superlatively talented performers, with spectacular showmanship, knife-edge timing, and superlative production values.

Thrill to a double high wire act – two bicycles crossing the wire with a pole between them on which balances a chair on top of which an acrobat does a one armed handstand.

Imagine two large cylinders rotating high in the air, while inside them, and then on top of them, two acrobats run, skip, somersault and in many other ways challenge gravity. Was the heart-stopping stumble real, or an act? The capacity audience will never know; but the sound of thousands of people gasping in shock and suspense was sign enough that they cared and were transfixed by the spectacle. And that gasp was to be heard again and again.
Add a superb backing band – I couldn't believe it was only eight people – and every single act being world-class – and we have a show that your humble reviewer feels is the best of the four he has been fortunate enough to see.

And if you are thinking of buying tickets—it would be a wonderful Christmas treat – have a look at the LastTix website, where there are a few discounted tickets.

LATE NEWS

Although safety wires and nets may have lessened the risks, they are real, as this Courier Mail story attests%%"Brisbane-based Cirque Du Soleil acrobat and former Olympic gymnast Lisa Skinner has escaped serious injury after falling and landing on her head during a show in Brisbane.

Paramedics were called to the big top at Skygate after Ms Skinner, 35, fell 3 to 5 metres during the Kooza show."

A Cirque spokesman said his company does everything it can to make the performers and technicians as safe as possible, but accidents still happen.

"It's like asking the police to prevent a car accident," he said. "It's happened three time in 32 years of Cirque history".%%

It is good to learn that Lisa is recovering well from a fractured vertebrae and is expected to be discharged from hospital soon.

Get well soon, Lisa.
