The new generation of wines from an old Clare Valley estate
At the southern end of the Clare Valley sits a sprawling vineyard and historic property known as Koonowla, situated just 5km southeast of Auburn. Dating back to the late 1800s, this pioneering property first planted grapevines in 1896 and has continued its original history of winemaking with its current owners since 2019, the George family.
Deeply respectful of Koonowla's extraordinary history, the George family have worked tirelessly to restore the original landmark buildings, rehabilitate the delightful grounds and reawaken the heritage winery and surrounding vineyards.
They now showcase the estate as a centre for great wine, as well as a stunning venue for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, community functions, corporate lunches and more. A variety of spaces are available to hire and they are happy to connect hirers with other local Clare Valley suppliers. See the website for more info.
Koonowla's beautifully renovated cellar door overlooks the stunning homestead gardens and rolling vineyards adjacent to the property. It boasts beautiful expansive lawns, perfect for enjoying picnics and the outdoors, with picnic blankets and tables available to use onsite.
On Friday 24th September, Koonowla hosted a night of good food and wine beside the fire pits, serving up Mexical morsels from food truck Tacocat, with live music performed by guitarist Liam Greenslade.
