The fringe of Perth's CBD has a colourful new edition designed to welcome families while paying respect to the traditional custodians of the land. Wellington Square has undergone a multi-million dollar overhaul, transformed from a simple garden to an outdoor event space and family destination, complete with a sprawling playground.

The drawcard of Wellington Square is Koolangka Koolangka Waabiny, a 3000m2 playground with something for all ages. Translating to 'Children Children's playground' in Whadjuk Nyoongar, Koolangka Koolangka Waabiny intergenerational space is named to respect and honour the land's traditional owners and custodians.

In the past, Wellington Square was a place where the Whadjuk Nyoongar people gathered with family, hunted and performed ceremonies. Now, families are invited to meet, play, celebrate and reflect. Split into seven distinct areas, the playground has something for every age and ability, including impressive play structures, skate and scooter park and a basketball court.

The Clearing is the space to kick a footy or run wild and is where you will find some of Perth's outdoor events and concerts. Next to this is the Water Springs, which provides a welcome splash of coolness in the hot Perth summer.

The Rock Escarpment is for climbing and exploring, with rope play and slides to navigate the concrete structure easily. Next to this is the toddler play area, with age-appropriate climbing frames, slides and roundabouts.

At the heart of the playground is the Candle Banksia, a huge play structure shaped like its namesake, the native Western Australia Banksia attenuata. It's definitely suited to older children, while younger kids can enjoy the rope play, gymnastic bar-esque structure and parkour elements of this area. The River is a scooter and skate park located adjacent to the Candle Banksia, and there is plenty of space for kids of all ages to practice their skills.

The Rock Formations is one of the more popular spaces due to the diversity of equipment and age groups catered for. It has a variety of equipment including rock and rope play for older children, a flying fox, a nest swing and mini trampolines.

Last but by no means least is the basketball court. We didn't get a great look at this area as we didn't have a ball and the oldest kids in the playground we busily shooting hoops - a sign of a welcome inclusion for teens and young adults.

Koolangka Koolangka Waabiny also has public barbecues and picnic tables, plus toilets. There is plenty of parking around the square, although weekends are a popular time to visit and you may have to walk a few minutes from your parking spot.

The playground is located close to the train line and can be easily reached by the free Perth CAT bus. There is so much on offer at this playground that you may need to plan another visit, or simply make a full day of it and let the kids run wild.
