Looking for relaxing, quiet, rural-like stay, yet wanting to be within 5 minutes of all the major conveniences ? If this is you, then the Kookaburra Cottage Farm Stay Bed and Breakfast could be right up your alley. With views, comfortable and modern facilities, and plenty of supplies, one could settle in here for the weekend and totally escape from reality.

The Kookaburra Farm Stay Bed and Breakfast is located on the northern outskirts of Burra, at the foot of the glorious bald hills. Looking north, one can't help but sit and ponder on one of the many seats in the garden as to why the bald hills are exactly that i.e.bald. Meanwhile looking south, one can see the main reason for Burra's existence in the 18th Century with the chimneys standing tall over the massive Monster Mine in the centre of town.

The Kookaburra Cottage is the original farm house that was built in 1892 on a massive land parcel of 7,000 acres. Several subdivisions later, the Cottage sits on a 5 acre lot alongside the Villa which is the residence of the owners of the property, Ruth and John. The 5 acres comprise some of the buildings, a large garden area that is currently housing a number of newly planted trees, shrubs and bushes, and several acres of farming land.

The Cottage is a great example of buildings from the 19th Century with two main rooms of 10 feet high ceilings, floorboards, and sharing a fireplace built between the rooms. Today one of these rooms is the main bedroom with a large and comfortable bed, while the other room is the lounge / family / sitting room come small kitchen.

Typical of buildings from this era were that the outbuildings (bathrooms etc) were usually demolished over time, and were incorporated within a huge veranda which when it was enclosed usually allowed the formation of several more rooms. In the case of Kookaburra Cottage, the same has occurred, and alongside the bathroom, with its magnificent claw foot bath is a laundry and a sitting room come meals area which is simply delightful to sit in and watch the sun move across the northern horizon in the afternoon.

Most modern facilities are fully provided including fans, electric heaters, electric blankets, cooking equipment, microwave, small oven, electric BBQ, fridge, TV, DVD, CD player and a woodshed complete with enough wood to light a fire big enough to keep even the coldest winter night away. The property is serviced by rainwater, and while that is suitable for washing with, it is recommended that the supplied spring water is used for drinking.

The garden areas are fenced and comprise a number of seats pointing in different directions to enable you to take the time to appreciate the many different vistas that are available. And if you do this just after sunrise, you will share this experience with a number of locals including kangaroos, rabbits, the odd crow, a sleepy blue tongue lizard and numerous galahs who come to observe the movements that are occurring on the nearby grazing lands.

Ruth and John, our hosts, certainly know how to stock a cottage to ensure that one doesn't have to head to town for supplies. From all the basic toiletries to bacon, eggs, tomatoes, yoghurt, pancakes and cereals for breakfast, plunger coffee and flavoured teas for beverages, olive oil and balsamic for my afternoon inspiration, mint slices for anytime, and marshmallows for the fire and the late night hot chocolate, there was more than enough for the weekend.

Kookaburra Cottage is available all year round, with bookings available through their website , their facebook page or by contacting the Burra Visitor Centre , and is the perfect place to stay when passing through Burra on the Heysen Trail or the Mawson Trail , or when looking for an extended stay to enjoy Burra's past heritage , and its current arts, crafts and antiques culture.
