Kombi Man - Film Review (Melbourne Documentary Film Festival 2023)
Based on the story of former psychologist and
Simple Man author Paul Mutimer,
Kombi Man is a pleasantly moving documentary directed and produced by Jeff Bird.
Kombi man doesn't own a Kombi himself. Instead, he aspires to own one and spends his days trawling car websites trying to find the perfect Kombi van for his dreams of road-tripping to the 12 Apostles, much to the pained amusement of his wife. His house is full of cheeky Kombi merchandise friends and family have gifted him over the years and this year, they've all chipped in to finally make his dream a reality. Unfortunately, due to the recent surge in popularity, Kombis are big business and out of his financial reach. His best friend Mark does own a Kombi and is tireless in his efforts to help his mate access the simple joys of van life.
We learn that Kombi Man is sick, very sick. In fact, he's in and out of hospitals semi-regularly for treatments for serious blood cancer. This proves to be the impetus for his search for the perfect kombi and one last getaway.
But will his clapped-out Kombi go the distance?Providing a glimpse into the origins of the mystical Volkswagen Kombi long celebrated by surfers for their versatility,
Kombi Man explores Paul's foray into alternative healing as he embarks on a spiritual journey reminiscent of the 1960s counterculture - from Buddhist Monasteries to Boinga Bob's three-storey treehouse in Warburton - in a race against time.
