Okay so everyone has heard of Koko Black chocolate shops, but not many people know what they're missing out on. I am talking about the upstairs area of Koko Black in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne, if you have never been up there you must put this on your to do list.

Why? Because it's every chocolate lovers dream in the most comfy surrounds. I'm talking Belgian hot chocolate, chocolate affogato, Belgian Spoil: a chocolate platter that includes walnut brownie, two pralines, florentines, ice cream and mousse, and so much more, all in the comfortable leather lounges or at the table and chairs. It exudes character with period architectural features and warmth that most modern spaces lack. Angels on the walls hold chandeliers that provide ambient light, antique sideboard for the counter, it really is a pleasant place to wind down after being in the hustle and bustle of the city all day long.

It was a full house upstairs when we went on a Saturday afternoon, however, after talking to a staff member they were happy for us to wait for a seat. Luckily it was only about 5 minutes later before the lounges were available and we were on our way up to chocolate heaven.

As soon as we were shown to our seats the waitress brought over some glasses and filled them with water and gave us our menu, I chose a Belgian hot chocolate, my daughter a chocolate ice cream spectacular, my sister a peppermint tea and an assortment of chocolates.

They arrived about ten minutes later, altogether. The hot chocolates are for serious chocolate lovers, so rich, like pure melted chocolate, I managed about 1/4 of the cup, don't get me wrong it was good, just super rich. As for the ice cream it was like frozen chocolate mixed with a little cream, hot chocolate sauce came in a little jug to pour onto it and there were chocolate biscuit type of crumbs on the base. My daughter ate about half a scoop before looking at it as if to say "I'm full ", the richness is like no other ice cream I have eaten, between us we couldn't make it half way through. Next time I think we will go for the one scoop option.

I think Koko Blacks cafe is pretty good value when you consider how much their chocolates are. The ice cream spectacular was $9.50, hot chocolate $6, cake $5.50, chocolate platter $13.50.

So next time you're in the city, take the time to visit Koko Black's upstairs cafe.
