Koko Black: treat yo' self
The simple Koko Black logo on their signature lilac carry bags.
Koko Black is the perfect accompaniment to a day of shopping (preferably with your mum). As soon as you walk through the glass doors, you're smacked with the scent of rich, delicious, and expensive-smelling chocolate. In a fancy glass cabinet, a huge array of expertly crafted chocolates awaits the white-gloved attendant and her lilac carry bags.
To the back of the store, almost hidden with mood lighting and chocolate displays, is the Koko Black café. This is where they feed you delights you couldn't dream up, and coffee with tiny cups of chocolate shavings. Your sore feet will be the last thing on your mind.
The Chocolate Alchemy Cake, $9.50
Chocolate Alchemy Cake $9.50 The 'cake' looks like a huge bar of chocolate. But don't be fooled: the blocks are empty, and underneath lies a decadent chocolate mousse with a fairly thin cake base. Somehow, they've managed to fit gold leaf into the price. Anything with this much chocolate, thought and creativity is going to taste as good as it looks.
The delicate and creamy chai tea flavoured centre is smothered in a rich layer of smooth, dark chocolate. Embellished with a tiny pink sugar flower that tastes of rosewater and sugar, and it's this gorgeous detail (offset perfectly by the dark chocolate) that speaks volumes of the quality of Koko Black. The flavour is mild, but this tiny morsel makes me feel like I'm drinking chai tea in a sun-filled conservatory, reading up on how to prune orchids.
Caramelised Coconut and Single Malt Whiskey Handcrafted Chocolate, $2.10 each
Caramelised Coconut Handcrafted Chocolate $2.10 8232;The almond praline is strong and nutty, its gritty texture contrasting beautifully with the glossy, smooth white chocolate. The barely there, subtle coconut flavour would not be noticeable if it hadn't been suggested in the name. Delicious, would purchase again.
Single Malt Whiskey Handcrafted Chocolate $2.10 This has the typical 'Koko black' smell, like when you first walk into the store and immediately gain 5 pounds. First bite and the whiskey hits the back of your throat, but disappears swiftly into smooth milk chocolate. Ganache filling is smooth and almost gelatinous. The whiskey flavour is strong, and in true Pavlovian form, I immediately feel warm and excited for a night out. Delicious – if you enjoy whiskey.
Anything you choose is going to be delicious, and you may as well take some home. Luckily, Chadstone Shopping Centre is huge, and you might even burn off half of that cappuccino looking for your car.
