Reynold Poernomo became a household sensation on Masterchef 2015 with his unique eye-popping desserts. Recently Reynold and his brothers opened Koi Dessert Kitchen at Ryde, a sister to their Chippendale dessert establishment. The name Koi, meaning Kids of Ike, pays homage to their wonderful mother who has been an inspiration to her remarkable three sons.

I recently spoke with Ike while she supervised the talented pastry cooks in the kitchen. Her face lit up as she described her love of cooking that began over 40 years ago, a passion that has inspired her sons to bake innovative and appealing desserts.

Koi Dessert Kitchen will conduct Master Classes during the year with guest chefs. The next Master Class will be presented by Christy Tania, a well-known pastry and dessert chef, on Thursday 18 May. Bookings are required, a maximum of 12 for each class. Click here for further details on this Master Class. Ike and Reynold will conduct classes later in the year presenting their distinctive style with desserts.

Koi also creates unusual birthday cakes such as Mookies which contains dark chocolate mousse with raspberry gel, or Mango and Yuzu Curd with vanilla joconde. Koi require three days notice to prepare these astounding creations. Starting price is $65 for 4 to 6 people. Koi is open at 10am and I would suggest getting there early as there are few tables in this wonderful establishment. Desserts vary in price but around $9.50 each.
