It was only a matter of time til I visited MasterChef fan favourite Reynold Poernomo's restaurant, Koi Dessert Bar. Located at the end of Kensington Street Chippendale past Spice Alley, is a two-level dessert-focused restaurant, with a ground floor café and an upstairs lounge and bar area, also offering savoury Indonesian dishes.
What immediately strikes you is the desserts on display at the counter and the cooks prepping and whipping ingredients, and Reynold in the background with a smile on his face as he banters with his staff and happily poses for photos with his fans, me being one of them.
So how does this place work? As a visitor to Koi you can:
Firstly, buy ready made pastries and desserts at the counter and eat them at the outdoor seating area which is the walk-in option. Secondly, buy the ready made pastries and desserts and order drinks to have upstairs. Make yourself comfortable in a booth and wait for your order to arrive.
Thirdly, if you want to be comfortable sit on level 1, and partake in a five-course menu, which consists of two savoury/three desserts for $77. Or choose dishes a la carte. Bookings are recommended.
