An annual fixture in Adelaide, Kodomo no Hi Festival , organised by Japan Australia Friendship Association (JAFA), is making its return to Thebarton Community Centre on Sunday 5 May 2024 from 11 am to 4 pm. This event is based on the festival of the same name held on 5 May in Japan to celebrate children’s personalities and their happiness.

At the festival, visitors can see and experience various aspects of Japanese culture, which include origami, ikebana (flower arranging), a performance of Japanese musical instruments and kimono dressing. Among the most popular activities are martial arts demonstrations and a train exhibit where visitors can experience what it is like controlling one. A unique demonstration was the preparation of mochi (Japanese rice cakes) using traditional tools.

Visitors can also purchase Japan-related products from the stores present. Food and drink stalls eliminate the need to bring your own refreshments. The food and drink stalls get really busy so purchasing your food early is advised to avoid having to queue too long for your meal.

If they desire, visitors can wear Japanese costumes to the event to keep with the theme. Parking for the festival is accessed from the entrance near Ashwin Parade.
