Let me say first off that I'm jealous. I'd like to see this initiative not only in the area where I live, but strewn all over Victoria. However, the lucky ones here are the Rowville residents who are set to gain from the opening of Knox's first free outdoor fitness station. Mayor Lockwood will launch this initiative on
Wednesday 24 June 2015 at 2pm. The place to be for the launch is
Gym Station 1, Liberty Avenue Reserve, Rowville, where you'll also be offered
free introductory sessions at 12.30pm, 2.30pm and 4pm. However, if you truly can't make it, you can check out the
Instruction Videos HERE and
HERE is a Fitness Program to aspire to.

There's a range of equipment such as a leg press, elliptical trainer, aerobic cycle machine and a stretch station.
The outdoor gym is spread across four separate stations which becomes the circuit across Rowville.
There's a station at Liberty Avenue near the playground, Liberty Avenue near Magdalena Place, the reserve at Jackie Close and the playground at Emerson Reserve. Connected by shared pathways, it's within easy access to walkers, runners and cyclists.
This innovative fitness circuit is a collaboration between the
Knox City Council and
VicHealth through the
Healthy Together Knox initiative, and it's hoped that it will encourage residents of all ages to increase their physical activity. This is just one part of a range of programs and strategies that's going to be delivered to the community through
Healthy Together Knox. Targeted at the underlying causes of chronic diseases such as insufficient physical activity and poor nutrition and increasing physical activity is one of the keys to overcoming obesity.
VicHealth , in partnership with
Sport and Recreation Victoria is working with
Knox City Council to improve communities participating in physical activity under the
Be Active initiative .
Significant community representation is expected at the launch, including nearby primary schools, preschools, sporting clubs and a retirement village. This equipment is for the enjoyment of the entire community so make sure you join in the free group sessions with a qualified instructor at the launch to learn how to use the machines properly.
The only downside I can see here is that there's not enough equipment if everyone heads out to get fit at the same time. The other is the need for parents, adults or carers to take responsibility to ensure that their little loved ones don't get hurt climbing over the equipment unsupervised or are in the way of users who are serious about their health. It's shiny, it's new and it's going to be a target kiddies are going to migrate to.
