A venture to seek the truth
Knoxfield Thai Restaurant is located on Ferntree Gully Road approximately 600 metres from the Scoresby Road fork. The signage is not flashy but it is hard to miss because it is next to Wok'd and that restaurant does indeed have a sign that pops out at you.
Parking is adequate in Knoxfield's free car park.
The first thing that draws your attention about the place is that is is seemingly very dark inside - not a very inviting look I have to admit. Nevertheless, I ventured forth, eager to fill myself with some Thai cuisine.
As generic as the name of this eatery sounds, it is actually Menulog's regional winner of the Best Thai in Melbourne's East. It sounded like a must-try restaurant so I went to check it out during July 2017. Bear in mind that the Tasty Takeaway Award is from 2015 so it is difficult to judge if the standard that is present today is similar to what it was two years ago.
There are eight tables in the establishment, each fitted with a tablecloth and crowned napkins. I chose a table upon entering and the waitress brought me a menu straight away. Very prompt service - then she asked if I was ready to order after five seconds of looking at the menu. I chose the Red Duck Curry with rice which was $15.50. As she whisked away the menu, I looked around the restaurant.
Firstly, the amount of food on the plate did strike me as quite petite - which I accepted assuming that the restaurant placed a higher emphasis on quality over quantity. Then I took a spoon of curry and rice and it became very apparent that the standard since the award must have dwindled quite steadily.
The rice was stale and hard - as if it had been left out for quite some time before making it to the table. It was not very warm either. The taste of the curry was pleasant and the level of spiciness was appropriate but the duck within was exceptionally tough. Overcooked duck is a lot of effort to chew.
I was feeling quite disappointed with the meal so far so I didn't order anything else.
The store takes EFTPOS for amounts over $20 and applies a 50c surcharge on orders under.
I can believe that this place used to be excellent but currently, it is not ticking the right boxes for their food to be considered tasty. Hopefully, their efforts pick up and I would be happy to revisit in a year's time.
