Knit one, purl one. If you know what these terms mean you already know the secret code to the various knitting and crochet groups around Brisbane and the Gold Coast and if you are intrigued to know more about these terms there are many groups that would be more than happy to welcome you into the fold.

Knitting and crochet are often considered lonely pursuits, and I have heard only too many times, 'my grandmother does that'. Knitting though has become very popular. Believe it or not, there is quite a knitting and crochet subculture in South East Queensland and, it is not made up of grandmothers. There are people from all walks of life who like to pick up sticks and hooks and create something out of yarn - men and women.

It is hard to believe in our warm balmy climate that we have some of the most talented weavers in the world and all are very happy to teach others and pass on their skills.

Not only is knitting and crochet a great creative outlet but if you have made a new years resolution to improve your health and well being, the research is in, knitting and crochet are the key. Studies show this type of crafting is good for brain health, fine motor control and stress. So work up a sweat creating a blanket or a scarf! Just an update, in case you're looking for some of those yarn shops, Tangled Yarns and Yarnover are now online only, and Knitch closed recently.
