If you've ever watched someone knitting or admired knitted items and wondered if you could possibly get two needles and a ball of yarn to turn into anything but a tangled mess, then you might want to consider taking knitting courses. There are several places that offer them at different times so you can find one that will fit into your schedule. Imagine knitting your new baby or grandbaby a blanket with your own two hands. It will be a keepsake to be passed down to generations. Learning how to knit can be achieved from a very young age to someone more older and mature.

The Studio is located at 34 West 15th Street and offers knitting and crochet classes. The classes are divided into levels, so as soon as you master Level 1, you can go on to Level 2. You'll learn such things as lace knitting and Tunisian crochet. You'll also learn about weaving and dyeing, which means you'll come away with quite a bit of knowledge in this exciting craft.

Gotta Knit

14 East 34th Street; 5th Floor, between 5th Avenue & Madison Avenue, is where you can go if you've just "gotta" knit (which just happens to be the name of the store. Here you will receive private lessons (yes, one-on-one) that will have you knitting or crocheting in one hour.

Learn such techniques as how to shape your work to make perfect armholes and necklines, the different types of stitches and stitch patterns (there are hundreds), and how to fix any mistakes you might make. Remember, these are private lessons, so you must call to make an appointment.

Purl SoHo

The SoHo is already an "artsy" district, so what better place to learn knitting than at Purl SoHo, 459 Broome Street, New York City? You will be in a class with a maximum of seven students, so each of you will have a relaxed atmosphere in which to learn knitting, sewing, and other methods of working with fabrics.

Purl SoHo also offers children's classes. So, now you can make it a special time with your daughter or son (boys can learn to knit, too, you know.) Call for information on class dates and times.

Dance As Ever

This may sound like an unusual name for a knitting workshop, but that's what it is. 33 West 44th Street, on the 3rd Floor, is where you'll learn such things as how to knit your first sock, the different types of stitches, and ultimately how to knit your first sweater.

Dance as Ever also offers a beginner's knitting class. The instructors make it easy for you to join, because they supply the materials. You don't have to worry about showing up with the wrong needles or yarn.
